FDS303 UVIR Flame Detector is officially SIL 2 certified by Exida to IEC 61508

Written by Graham Duncan | 04/2/26

SIL 2 certified. Proven integrity.

The FDS303 UVIR Flame Detector is now SIL 2 certified by Exida to IEC 61508.

A major milestone. Built on detailed engineering, disciplined processes and independent assessment.

What this means:

The FDS303 UVIR has been assessed to IEC 61508 Parts 1–3 and meets the requirements for:

  • Systematic Capability SC 2 (SIL 2 capable)
  • Random Capability Type B element
  • SIL 2 capability at HFT = 0 via Route 2H

It is suitable for use in SIL 2 Safety Instrumented Functions when applied correctly.

Built for performance where it matters

We see what you can’t.

The FDS303 UVIR is designed to detect hydrocarbon fires that are not visible to the human eye. Using advanced flame detection algorithms, it delivers fast, reliable detection with strong immunity to false alarms.

Performance where it matters most. In high-risk environments where detection must be both fast and trusted.

More than a product certification

SIL is not just about the device. It is about how the product is designed, built and supported.

This certification reflects:

  • Controlled design processes
  • Verified software development
  • Detailed failure rate analysis
  • Full safety documentation and lifecycle management
  • Routine field product performance monitoring and analysis
  • Continuous evaluation of operational product reliability

It confirms that the FDS303 UVIR has been developed to meet the demands of functional safety systems.

System level responsibility

SIL is achieved at system level.

Final SIF performance must be verified for each application. This includes proof testing, diagnostics, repair times and system architecture.

The FDS303 UVIR must be applied in line with its Safety Manual, with PFDavg calculations carried out as part of the design.

A result delivered by the team

This has been an extensive project. It required focus, discipline and attention to detail across engineering, quality and documentation.

The result strengthens the FDS303 UVIR as a high integrity solution for demanding fire and gas applications.
