A few minutes with Ben Rafferty, Consultancy Services Manager

Ben Rafferty runs our consultancy team at Micropack. He's busy at the moment with fire and gas projects in the UK, a toxic hazard assessment in Australia and a new version of HazMap3D, so we grabbed him for a quick chat about his job and what's on his desk right now.

Hi Ben, what do you do in the business?

I'm the Consultancy Services Manager. I look after our consultancy team, who carry out fire and gas reviews. I also look after HazMap3D, our mapping software, and the training courses we run.

What does the consultancy team offer?

Mainly Fire and Gas Mapping for client sites. That can be anything from a simple storage room up to a full assessment of an onshore terminal. The focus is on how well the flame and gas detection systems are designed and how much of the area they cover. We can also look at smoke and heat detection, sounders and beacons, and where the manual call points go.

What are you working on at the moment?

A few different projects for oil and gas clients here in the UK, plus a Toxic Hazard Assessment in Australia. I'm also updating our training and working on the next version of HazMap3D.

What do you enjoy most about the job?

Getting to know the hazards a particular site is dealing with, then working out a solution that fits it. Lots of things can affect how well detection works, so every job's a bit different.

What do customers ask you most?

"Can we move this detector?" Usually the answer's yes, as long as everyone understands the impact on detection, it's recorded and it's accepted.
